Roots spreading in a propagation vase

An Introduction to Root Propagation in Water

of reading

Do you like hydroponics? Do you like plants and flowers? Would you like to see your roots spread in water?

Then this complete guide about water propagation and root cutting will surely interest you!

Root propagation is a natural phenomenon of diffusion of the roots of a flower or a plant in a growth medium (water or soil).

To observe roots' development, we use a transparent Propagation Vase composed of a top part allowing to maintain the leaves of the plant and of a low part allowing an optimal spreading of the roots in water.

In this article, we will look at:

  • What is plant propagation
  • What is a propagation vase
  • How do you use a propagation tube

By the end of this article, you'll know the basics about root propagation and the best way to see the phenomenon. The goal? To make you discover how spreading roots works and their added value for your decoration.

Are you ready? Then let's go!

What is Root Propagation in Water?

Before we get into the nitty gritty of helping you choose your first propagation vase, it's important to review root propagation and what it can do for your home decor.

This part will be a perfect introduction to start propagating your roots in the best way!

Which Plants can be Propagated in Water?

It is important to know that there are two ways to propagate cuttings: in soil and in water.

The advantage of propagating in soil is the wide choice of plants you will have. Indeed, the first habitat of plants is the soil, which will facilitate your choice. However, be careful: not all plants do well with propagation!

Conversely, hydro propagation will limit your choice of plants, but the result will be incredible: with a transparent vase, you will be able to see the root development!

Since we are experts in hydroponics, we will talk about propagation in water.

That said, we made a selection of the best plants for water propagation :

  • Aroid plants: such as pothos plants, philodendrons, monsteras, ZZ plants. Their roots grow well in water because their ancestors lived in the swamps.
  • Tropical plants: like avocado, christmas cactus, succulents. Because they live in a hostile environment, these plants have developed the habit of developing long roots in order to draw water from the soil to the maximum

How to Propagate Cuttings?

Now, let's see how to best prepare your cuttings so that they grow best in water :

  1. First, you need to find the best spot to cut your plant. On a majority of plants, there is the presence of nodes.
  2. Once you have found a node, use a knife or scissors to cut your plant. Be sure to cut below the node, about 0.25 in.
  3. Once the plant is cut, put it in a vase with water at a sufficient height. The water temperature for propagation is between 68°F to 70°F to avoid premature aging or rotting.
  4. In terms of maintenance, remember to change your water every two to three days.

Now you know how to get started with root propagation! It may take a few weeks to a few months depending on the type of plant. To speed up the process, you can also add a little bit of a hydroponic solution to speed up the process.

There are also other methods to spread your roots, but they are more complex to implement.

Now that we have seen what root spreading is, we'll introduce you to the different propagation vessels. Indeed, there are different ways to get this type of decoration, and this part of the article will give you all the elements you will need to choose it.

What are the Best Propagation Jars?

Propagation stations are usually transparent, large and in the shape of a bulb. There a many different models with different colors, sizes etc.

A beautiful glass propagation vase will perform its function of spreading roots while keeping the plant healthy.
